A job application is your chance to shine. We know it can be really time-consuming filling out your information for each job but it is important to complete your application in detail and with care as it's your chance to make a good first impression.
Take your time in filling out application forms and follow any instructions carefully. It may sound simple but mistakes will lessen your chances so just remember three things:
Allow yourself plenty of time and some peace and quiet, as you are more likely to make errors if you rush or are distracted.
Read through the form before you start. Make sure you understand the questions and all the instructions such as 'Complete in black ink'.
Once you have filled in as much as you can, get someone you trust to read it through for you before you send it off.
A cover note is essentially a brief description of why you think you are the right person for the job. Remember that it is also a chance to catch the employer's eye. Here are some tips to writing the perfect cover letter.
Keep it short and factual.
Talk about why you are interested and what you can offer the company.
Leave out your minimum salary so that you can negotiate at a later stage.
Tweak the note for each job you apply for and keep a reference of them all.
Remember that the more jobs you apply for the more chance you have at being successful. It might feel frustrating if you don't get an interview straight away, but the experience will only make your next application stronger. The best thing to do is to save copies of your cover note and previous applications to help you apply for new jobs quickly and easily.
